The answer will vary depending on each person’s reality — and some people have even found a kind of psychologist in AI.

AI is entering our lives at a pace that’s hard to grasp. Since ChatGPT launched on 30 November 2022, chatbots have been reshaping everyday life. In just three years, ChatGPT reached over 700 million weekly active users. And today, a large share of what people share with their favourite chatbot is personal — a sign of a deeper shift in how we seek support, learn, organise our lives, and solve everyday questions.

But what is AI, exactly? And how does it “think”?

Broadly speaking, AI is a set of systems trained on huge amounts of data to do things that used to be purely human: understand language, recognise faces, and recommend books, films, series, or products. But it also gets things wrong — sometimes with impressive confidence. And for anyone who’s struck up a friendship with an AI, here’s the reality: today’s systems are still a long way from being a conscious mind that “understands you perfectly”.

Large Language Models (LLMs) run on very fast mathematics that predicts what comes next, backed by a lot of training behind the scenes. We can teach them to tell a dog from a car (or a cat), help us draft an email, or summarise a 30-page report. And like any tool, what matters isn’t only what it can do — but who uses it, and why. The answers you get depend on the data it has learned from. And when you ask for an “opinion”, the output can change depending on what information you ask it to consider — and how the model is built.

AI systems, like people, have biases

As Harvard’s “Which Humans?” study shows, when an AI responds “like humans”, it often reflects people from Western, educated, industrialised, rich and democratic contexts — what researchers call WEIRD.

What’s interesting about the study is that it makes something very clear: AI systems, like people, have biases. In this study, they put the model through specific cognitive tests. In one classic task — grouping three items (“panda, banana, and monkey”) — the model responds the way someone from a more analytical culture often would: it groups panda with monkey because they belong to the same category. But when researchers compare that with data from many countries, they find that outside those contexts people are more likely to group monkey with banana, because many of us instinctively link monkeys with eating bananas.

When they broaden the analysis, a clear pattern emerges: the further you are (culturally) from the United States, the less the model “looks like” you. Put simply, the model has absorbed the cultural lens of certain countries and groups — and the further you are from WEIRD contexts, the more likely its answers are to miss other perspectives.

So whenever AI gives us an answer, it’s worth asking: “Where is it speaking from?” What data is it drawing on — and through what lens is it interpreting it? What assumptions is it making about family life, business, or education? And is it leaning on US sources simply because those are the ones it finds most easily?

What does Artificial Intelligence (AI) mean to you?
