That number has quietly changed how people research private health insurance — not by sending them to a broker’s website or a comparison tool, but by sending them to ChatGPT. The question “which private health insurer should I choose?” is increasingly being asked of AI platforms — before a quote is requested, before a broker is called. What those platforms answer, and where that answer comes from, is what this experiment set out to document.

In April 2026, we ran two questions about UK private medical insurance across four platforms — ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in incognito mode, and Claude in an identified session. Two questions, four models, results documented in full. Most of what we found confirmed a pattern we had already seen in other markets. One finding was specific to this experiment, and it changes how any insurer — or anyone advising insurers — should think about AI visibility.

What the four platforms recommended

The two questions were direct: first, which providers would you recommend for private health insurance in the UK and why. Second, what are the differences between Bupa, AXA Health and Vitality, and which has the best ratings.

Across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in incognito mode, the core of recommended providers was consistent: Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality and WPA appeared in all three. The recommendations looked similar enough that a reader might assume the models were drawing from the same source. They were not — and the differences only become visible when you look at what each platform cited, and how it weighted what it found.

None of the answers came from the insurers

This is the structural finding that holds across every platform we tested. We tracked every source cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity across both questions.

Source

ChatGPT

Gemini

Perplexity

WeCovr

✓

✓

✓

myTribe Insurance

✓

—

✓

Drewberry

✓

—

✓

Going Private UK

✓

—

✓

Which?

✓

✓

—

MoneySavingExpert

✓

✓

✓

Compare My Health Insurance

—

✓

—

Lifepoint Healthcare

—

—

✓

Reddit (r/AskUK)

—

—

✓

Bupa website

✗

✗

✗

AXA Health website

✗

✗

✗

Vitality website

✗

✗

✗

2 questions × 3 incognito platforms. Sources cited in responses, April 2026. ✗ = not cited by any platform.

No corporate website for Bupa, AXA Health or Vitality appeared as a cited source in any of the three incognito platforms. Every piece of information these models offered about UK private health insurers came from brokers, comparison sites, consumer organisations and specialist review publishers. One detail worth noting: Reddit’s r/AskUK appeared as a source in Perplexity. Forum content carrying meaningful weight in an AI health insurance recommendation is not something most marketing teams are monitoring — but in the UK market, it is happening.

What this means for any insurer is direct: the narrative their potential customers receive through AI is not written by their content team. It is assembled from sources the insurer does not control, with editorial positions the insurer has no input into. Improving the corporate website does not change this. The leverage sits elsewhere.

Vitality — four platforms, four different verdicts

This is where the UK experiment produced something the data from other markets had not shown as clearly.

When we asked all four platforms about the differences between Bupa, AXA Health and Vitality, the responses agreed on Bupa and AXA Health with reasonable consistency. On Vitality, they did not.

ChatGPT presented Vitality positively — a unique rewards model, lifestyle perks, competitive pricing for users who engage with the programme. The framing was “most polarising” but the overall recommendation was conditional rather than cautionary. Gemini gave it the lowest customer satisfaction score of the three providers but still recommended it for active, tech-engaged users. Perplexity ranked it third, behind Bupa and AXA Health, with no specific warning about claims experience.

Claude, operating with an identified session, cited Which? customer satisfaction data directly: Vitality holds the lowest customer score among reviewed providers, with a claims score of 58% against a market average of 70%. The recommendation was explicit — avoid Vitality unless genuinely committed to the wellness engagement model and clear on the claims trade-off.

Three platforms presented Vitality as a legitimate option with a specific user profile. One presented it as a risk. All four were drawing from an overlapping pool of UK sources. None of them told the user that their weighting of those sources had produced a different risk assessment from the other platforms.

A user asking which insurer to choose on Perplexity receives a different picture of Vitality than a user asking the same question on Claude. Neither user knows this. Vitality’s marketing team almost certainly does not know it either.

Why the same sources produce different answers

The models do not read sources equally. They weight them by signals that include recency, how many other sources reference the same claims, structural clarity, and the specificity of the data presented. A Which? customer satisfaction survey and a WeCovr broker comparison can coexist in the same model’s training data and be assigned different weight depending on the query, the user context, and the platform.

This is what makes AI visibility different from search visibility. In search, a page either ranks or it does not. The result is deterministic — the same query from different users produces the same ranked list. In generative AI, the same query from different users, on different platforms, with different session contexts, can produce genuinely different recommendations about the same company.

For private health insurance specifically, this has a consequence that goes beyond marketing. A user deciding whether to choose Vitality based on an AI recommendation that omits the claims satisfaction data is making that decision with incomplete information. The incompleteness is not a bug or a hallucination — it is a structural feature of how different models weight the same available sources. The NHS exists as a safety net, but the decision to complement it with private cover is still consequential. The information asymmetry the AI introduces into that decision is not neutral.

What this means if you’re the insurer — and if you’re the buyer

For a marketing director at any UK private health insurer, the finding is uncomfortable but specific. The sources that shape AI recommendations in this market are WeCovr, Drewberry, myTribe Insurance, Going Private UK, Which? and MoneySavingExpert. These are the publications whose editorial positions, data choices and comparison criteria determine what millions of users read when they ask AI which insurer to choose. The insurer’s own content does not reach the models directly — it reaches them, if at all, through how these intermediaries describe it.

That means the strategic question is not “how do we improve our website for AI?” It is “what are these sources saying about us, how current is that information, and how are different models weighting it?” For Vitality, the gap between what three of the four platforms say and what one says is already visible and already consequential. For other insurers, the equivalent gap may exist without anyone having mapped it.

For the buyer, the practical implication is simpler: the AI response that feels authoritative — because it cites Which? and MoneySavingExpert by name — is still a synthesis, and the synthesis varies by platform. Checking the same question across two or three platforms before making a decision takes three minutes and can produce meaningfully different risk profiles for the same insurer.

The UK private health insurance market is one of the most content-saturated sectors in British consumer finance. Bupa, AXA Health and Vitality have invested heavily in digital presence for years. None of their corporate websites appeared as a cited source in any of the three incognito platforms we tested.

The mechanism that determines what AI says about these companies sits entirely outside their owned content — and it does not behave the same way in every market. In some sectors, a single well-structured article published on a company’s own website can shift how AI describes that company. Whether that holds in UK private health insurance, and what the equivalent lever is here, is a question the data from this experiment opens but does not close.

NHS waiting lists hit 7.6 million.
